Robotic Hummingbird

The project goal is to develop a hummingbird-like flying robot, Micro Air Vehicle, capable of hovering. We are aiming at a tail-less design: a pair of flapping wings with variable kinematics should generate the necessary thrust as well as control moments, mimicking hummingbirds and insects.

The latest prototype is driven by a 8 mm brush-less DC motor. The 9 cm wings flap at 24 Hz and generate up to 16 grams of lift. A take-off was demonstrated with one of the previous versions (power off-board + guide wire stabilization). The control mechanism for flight stabilization is under development; two strategies (wing twist modulation and amplitude and offset modulation) are being explored.
